A Fall 2024 course to be announced in August 2024
2024 SUMMER COURSE NOW CLOSED. Keep an eye out for the Fall 2024 offering.
I am offering a 6 week course this summer for teens and young adults. Applications for the course are now open. I am using the curriculum from Beyond Personal Finance created by Charla McKinley. You can check out the curriculum on her website: bpfclass.com If this course offering doesn’t fit your schedule or if you’d like to go it alone I strongly recommend this course to everyone.
There are 11 student spots for the course and the fee for the course is $25 for each student. The fee covers the course itself and shipping for the workbook. The course includes access to the online videos, the online live instruction and a workbook. The summer schedule for this course is Monday/Wednesday from June 10-July 17. This equals 12 sessions that are 1.5 hours long. The expectation is that you’ll watch the supporting videos and submit your homework online between class sessions, this will require an additional hour or so a week and therefore you’ll need to commit to putting in the time needed for each week. The course guides you through the stages of life and how those stages impact your finances. The ideas in the course allow you to understand the power you have in your financial choices. The course allows you to make the necessary choices and challenges you to also experience hiccups that life tosses your way. This course gives safe practice for decision making that will influence your future.
Applications are open until May 30 and email notifications will be sent out June 1. Depending on who and how many apply will determine who is able to get a seat in the course. Workbooks will be mailed to you so that you can get started for our first session on June 10.
Why am I offering this course? I personally had no idea how to manage my money when I left for college and ultimately lived on my own. I made some decisions that took my financial freedom away and I owed a lot of debt that stopped me from doing a lot of things that I would have loved to do. If I had a course like this when I was in high school or my first few years of college I believe I would have made decisions that would have provided me with more freedom. I want that for you.
I hope you consider this course as an option for you this summer. If you have any questions please send me an email. emily@nothingisseperate.com If we are not able to fit you into this course or this schedule doesn’t fit for your plans you can keep an eye out for 2025 course offerings. Following our finance newsletter will help you stay informed on future offerings. (link here to join newsletter)

I have 20+ years of experience working with youth aged 16-22 as well as educating my own children. I have also taught a wide range of workshops ranging from time management to email etiquette. I have taught this particular course three prior times as well. I am familiar with the curriculum and have seen how it can impact the student. I also have personal experience on how important financial literacy is for a young adult starting off.
If you know ahead of time prior to submitting your application, include this information in the application. Missing one or two sessions will be easily rescheduled. More than two missed sessions will hinder your learning of the materials and not be fair to the other students. If you miss one of the sessions once the course has started see answer below.
I worked hard to obtain the access codes and workbooks for this summer course offering but my time in facilitating the sessions, reviewing the budget assignments and mailing the workbooks all cost money. Mailing the workbooks costs approximately $10.60. If all 11 student spots are filled that would mean the facilitator would be “paid” $26.40 per week to lead the course for 3 hours plus reviews of assignments. That equals $6.60 per hour. If you'd like to take the course on your own it would be $150 at the site for the company that owns the curriculum.
If it is a financial burden to pay the fee please apply anyway and include a one page document explaining why you'd like a spot for free. The form has an attachment option for any files you feel would be helpful for me to make decisions.
Just let me know why and we can schedule a make-up session
Yes, so long as you ensure that you are not copying the workbook (you can order an additional workbook from the Beyond Personal Finance site if you don't want to share but I'd need to coordinate this with you). A limited number of doubled up admissions are available to allow for me to facilitate properly. If I accept too many of these I will make even less than the $6.60 I've already described above.
